CRO strategies, worked examples and the levers that matter
Most companies invest in more traffic. The smarter ones invest in a better conversion rate. A quick calculation: at 10,000 visitors, the difference between a 1% and a 2.5% conversion rate is 150 additional customers a month — without spending a cent more on ads.
Conversion rate optimisation (CRO) is the most underrated lever in online marketing. And yet most companies put less than 5% of their budget into it.
Conversion rate optimisation means turning the traffic you already have into more customers — by improving the user experience, the content and the technical performance of your website or your shop.
Why is CRO so powerful?
Does a visitor understand within three seconds what you offer and why it is relevant to them? The headline is the single most important conversion factor — and most brands still neglect it.
Reviews, testimonials, trust seals, as-featured-in logos, guarantees. Nobody buys without trust, least of all from a shop they have never heard of.
Is the CTA clear, specific and prominent? "Buy now" beats "Find out more". One CTA per section, always visible, with a clear benefit attached.
The widely cited rule of thumb is that every additional second of load time costs 7% of conversion rate. The targets to aim for:
More than 70% of your traffic arrives on a phone. Most brands still design desktop first. The mobile CRO basics:
Up to 70% of baskets are abandoned. The most common reasons, and what to do about each of them:
Take a typical Shopify shop:
And the same shop at a 2.5% conversion rate:
All of that without spending another euro on ads. This is arithmetic rather than a forecast, but it is the reason CRO is the most powerful lever any online shop has, and why it belongs at the start of every plan for scaling an ecommerce brand.
"I think the page looks nice" is not an argument. CRO runs on data: heatmaps, session recordings, analytics and A/B tests.
Change ten things at the same time and you will not know which one did the work. Test in isolation and in a fixed order.
A/B tests need statistical significance. Depending on traffic, that takes 2–8 weeks. Stopping after three days produces decisions that are worse than no decision.
The checkout matters, but if the product page does not convert, visitors never reach the checkout in the first place.
Desktop conversion rates are often two to three times higher than mobile ones. That is not a law of nature — it is a signal that shows you where the largest gap sits.
CRO is not a nice-to-have. It is the biggest lever for growth that pays for itself. Investing in CRO makes every other marketing channel work harder, because you get more out of the same traffic.
